Looking through the photos I've taken today and found this one. I have no idea what it is, and I've certainly not seen anything like it before. It is very small and is sitting on the stem of a scabious flower head. As it looks a bit like an aphid I searched for 'winged aphids' and was amazed to find that they are common in UK .........
Has anyone seen one? and can this be identified?
I have only dabbled very briefly with aphids, but there is a good website: http://influentialpoints.com/Gallery/Aphid_genera.htm
ReplyDeleteKnowing the host plant is usually a big help, but there are also some generalists of course...
Thanks George.
ReplyDeleteI try not to dabble with the little beasts but they have taken a liking to several of my flowering shrubs - where are the ladybirds when you need them?
lots of info and pictures on that site though.
I have found an image at http://www.warrenphotographic.co.uk/12575-rose-aphid which looks very much like mine so I think it could be a winged Rose Aphid (female). Don't know what the white patches on the wings are though!
