daffodils in flower on 02 Jan

This is a very strange winter. I've recently seen daisies and buttercups in flower in the garden but today there are daffodils in flower on the roadside verge where Cardiff Road, Creigiau joins the A4119 !

  1. Yes; very strange indeed. I found Lesser Celandine in flower on boxing day, whereas I would normally find my first in flower, up here, sometime towards the middle or end of February. Not only have the Celandines begun flowering, but their leaves are already quite heavily mined by the fly Phytomyza ranunculi.
I have Primula vulgaris in flower in the garden. It is the wild primrose, from a clump I found on the beach at Porthkerry, brought down in a cliff fall, so certainly not a garden variety.
Brambles are still flowering in places as is Hogweed.

  2. I've seen Lesser Celendines in flower a few times in January, but the brambles are really unusual - I've also seen them in flower in a few places recently. Given December was the mildest on record I guess these oddities shouldn't be too surprising.
