False Widow spider

Saw this on the house wall on Friday night (29 September). Never seen a spider in the garden with this abdominal pattern - could this be Steatoda nobilis (Noble False Widow spider) ?

  1. Definitely a Steatoda Howard, but I'm not much good at spiders and wouldn't like to say for definite that it is nobilis rather than grossa. I've seen female nobilis in Cardiff, though yours is a male.

    1. Thanks George. The abdomen pattern appears to favours nobilis rather than grossa so I will record it as that and see what comes back.

    2. That's definately Steatoda nobilis. The creamy markings on the abdomen are distinctive for that species. I saw it in Barry, but you can expect it to pop up more and more frequently in synanthropic settings.
