flies in garage

These were/are in the garage at the moment, both roughly 8-10mm. I think the first (two images) may be a Banded Mosquito but not sure .... and I can't find the other one at all - obviously missing something because it's quite distinct.

mosquito ?

Any help appreciated.

  1. Hi Howard

The Mosquito is a Banded-mosquito which I believe is Culiseta annulata. The other fly could be either a Scanthophaga? or a Conops? but not sure.

  2. Thanks Mike.

I've never, knowingly, seen a mosquito in the house/garden before ... but the banded legs really made this one stand out.

  3. And it's a female mosquito, just look at those mouthparts ready to stick into your arm. They often come indoors to hibernate.

Sorry can't help with the other one.
